Treatment of Infertility
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is different from Western medicine. TCM is guided by the theory of Yin Yang and Five Elements, which shows clear differences between western medicine and TCM in the treatment of infertility. Western medicine often will only look at the condition of infertility in isolation. This is not the case with TCM. TCM aims to treat the patient holistically, accounting for any other health conditions that may be harming the patient. The following are a few cases of infertility patients treated by Dr. Fung using the Chinese medicine theory.
Case 1: The patient is infertile, accompanied by fatigue, cold hands and feet, poor sleep, and anxiety. At the time of consultation, the patient’s tongue is light red, with a thin whitish coating and small, wiry pulse. She is diagnosed with a deficiency of qi and blood combined with stagnation of liver qi. The treatment for her is invigorating qi and replenishing blood, soothing liver and regulating qi. Following this treatment, the patient was able to become pregnant.
Case 2: The patient is infertile, 42 years old. She reports that she strongly dislikes the cold, her appendages are consistently cold, and she likes to drink hot water. The patient reports an occasional dull pain in her lower abdomen. Her tongue is light red, the coating of her tongue is thin whitish, and her pulse is deep and thin. The diagnosis of Chinese medicine is a coagulation of the uterus due to cold and a deficiency of qi and blood. The necessary steps to treat this patient’s condition is invigorating qi and blood and warming her uterus. By following this treatment plan, the patient’s infertility was remedied successfully, and the patient was able to become pregnant.
Case 3: The patient presents with symptoms of infertility, with poor sleep and hot flashes occasionally. Her tongue is light red, the coating is thin whitish, and the pulse is deep and thready. The diagnosis of Chinese medicine is a deficiency of yin and blood. The treatment for her is nourishing yin and blood. The patient achieves the desired outcome of pregnancy.
Other reasons can cause infertility, such as kidney deficiency, accumulation of phlegm-wetness, blood stasis in the uterus, and so on. For infertility, Chinese medicine doctor needs to give patients a diagnosis depending on traditional Chinese medicine theory, and then treat patients according to the diagnosis of Chinese medicine. Generally, a treatment course is three to six months, so patients who want to make use of Chinese medicine should prepare in advance.
